Did the earth move?

Apparently Vanuatu was hit by an earthquake yesterday. I am afraid I did not notice this one. In the past three weeks there have been a couple of small tremors; but that's just a normal part of everyday life here. When you lie in bed at six in the morning it can actaully be quite soothing, this gentle rocking of your bed. But yesterday morning between the islands of Pentecost and Malekula ('my' island!),  it registered 6.9 or so, deep underneath the bottom of the sea. I don't think it caused a lot of damage but they were expecting a small tsunami on these two islands- a 'tsunamini' so to speak. I might actually be able to go and see what the consequences of that might have been, as I am flying out to Malekula this afternoon. Hooray, by tonight -inshallah- I will have moved into my new house (nu haos blong mi) and I can start unpacking my bags!

mijn laptop meldt me vandaag dat: The article focuses on the context of the puzzles and the methods used to solve them in New Ireland and the Republic of Vanuatu, especially on the island of Malekula. A number of designs from Vanuatu have mythic significance. There is a tradition that one must complete a certain diagram to enter the Land of the Dead; failure results in being eaten. The methods used to draw the diagrams are also very interesting. In many cases, Ascher shows how individual drawing elements are transformed by processes such as reflection and rotation and are combined in systematic ways to draw the figure. Other types of mathematical ideas from Malekula include a drum signaling system with rhythms for each clan, rank, grade of pig, and special phrases, and a six-class marriage system which the elders explained with diagrams in the sand.

Puzzel ze! Piet
