"Helloooo!"
After I wrote the last post I went for dinner at an outdoor hawker centre, which is an outdoor collection of hole-in-the-wall restaurants surrounded by lots of tables. The orgininal 'foodcourt', if you like. Here I encountered an example of the enthousiasm I described in my previous post. I thought I'd quickly share this with you before I went to bed.
I sat down at a table next to three young blokes, 20 -25 years of age I guess. When I gave the waitress my order they looked and listened in with uninhibited curiosity. Afterwards they repeated amongst themselves: "She is having an apple drink!" (A freshly juiced apple with water, sugar and lots of icecubes, very refreshing) and "She ordered nasi kampung!" (A plate of fried rice with bits and bobs) and finally "And 6 sateh ayam!" (The sateh here is truly the best I have ever tasted. And the best thing: if it were any cheaper it would be free. 20 euro cents for 3 skewers...!). After the excitement about what I was about to eat, the bravest of the three tried to strike up a converation with me. Not an easy thing to do with me knowing no more than 4 Malaysian words and he knowing about 50 English ones. However, it turned out they were from Indonesia and had lived in Terrenganu for four years. Language-wise this did not help, but I remembered that I happend to have an Indonesian phrasebook in my bag. So as he sat studying the phrasebook, people at surrounding tables started questioning his friends:
" Where is she from??"
"From Poland!"
"How old is she?!" (This from the wife of the stall owner)
"41!" (She was 39 and not looking forward to 40. I told her that 40 is cool. I am not sure if she believed me.)
I asked the guy engrossed in the phrasebook if he thought it was a good book and he answered "yes!". Unfortunately this was all the conversation we had in the end, so I am not sure if he was being merely polite. They had to leave:
"Okay, I am go."
"Okay, nice to have met you!"
